The Westside Church of Christ is not a building, we are a group of Christians who meet at designated times on Sundays and Wednesdays to worship the Lord in Spirit and in Truth. We strive to be like the 1st century church in our beliefs and practices. We are known as “the churches of Christ” not out of any desire to be sectarian or divisive, but because of our passion to honor the one to whom we truly belong- the Lord Himself. (Romans 16:16)
We believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and that Christ will return to take his Kingdom home to Heaven. (John 20:30-31, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 1 Corinthians 15:24) We believe the Bible teaches that sinners are saved by hearing the Word of God, believing the Word of God, repenting of one’s past sins, confessing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, being baptized into Jesus Christ by immersion in water for forgiveness of sins and living faithfully and righteously until death. (Romans 10:17, Hebrews 11:6, Acts 2:38, Matthew 10:32-33, Acts 2:38, Revelation 2:10)
We welcome you to come worship with us no matter what your current beliefs may be. If you have never attended worship services with the church of Christ, there are a few differences in our worship and the worship services of most Christian denominations that you are likely to notice:
- Our services consist of singing and prayer followed by a lesson, and ending with either a song or a prayer. Our song leaders and preachers who lead the songs and teach the lessons do not wear clothing different than that of the rest of the congregation, or have special titles -we are all brothers and sisters in Christ. (Matthew 23:9)
- We use no instruments in our worship services. The Church in the 1st century use only vocal music in their worship services. (Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16). No Christian church used instruments until it was introduced into the services of the Catholic church by pope Vitalian some- where between 658 and 670 A.D. Despite the ever-increasing popularity of praise teams and bands in many “Christian” churches, worship is not about entertaining ourselves, but about pleasing our God.
- We take communion every Sunday. The 1st century church met every first day of the week to break bread and commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus as he commanded be done at the last Passover meal he had with his disciples. (Acts 20:7, Matthew 26:26-30).
